Iran FM Araghchi in New York for UNGA as US airline sanctions threat looms

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in New York on Monday for the 81st UN General Assembly session, with President Masoud Pezeshkian due to join him, as US sanctions threats against Iranian airlines loom. Araghchi held talks with Qatari officials in Doha en route and spoke by phone with UN Secretary-General António Guterres. Pezeshkian is scheduled to address the General Assembly on Wednesday and meet foreign leaders, expatriates, and American experts. Washington approved visas for the core delegation but restricted their movements to UN-linked locations, denying visas to some media team members. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned that from September 23, foreign companies providing services to Iranian airlines could face secondary sanctions.
