Russian strikes on Ukrainian defense plants and ships kill five in Kyiv

Russia launched overnight drone attacks on Ukrainian defense industry facilities and ships, killing five people in Kyiv, including a 14-year-old boy. The strikes also forced ArcelorMittal to halt production at Ukraine's largest steel plant. Moscow's Defense Ministry said it hit a drone assembly site near Kyiv, a logistics center in Odessa, port infrastructure in Reni, and cargo ships carrying military equipment. A Datagroup data center and a McDonald's food warehouse were also struck, as President Zelensky called for a global response. The steel plant closure further damages Ukraine's steel sector, once 15% of exports, already pressured by Russian attacks and EU restrictions. The UN recorded at least 200 civilian deaths in September from strikes damaging homes, hospitals, and shops.
