Poland scrambles jets and activates air defense after Russian helicopter incursion
Poland scrambled fighter jets and placed air defense systems on high alert Thursday morning following Russian attacks on Ukraine near the Polish border. The measures are described as preventive and aim to protect Polish airspace, particularly in areas bordering Ukraine. The operational command stated that ground-based air defense and radar systems have been activated, with the situation being closely monitored. This heightened readiness follows a Russian Mi-8 helicopter violating Polish airspace on Wednesday, crossing from Kaliningrad and flying about 300 meters into Poland for 42 seconds. This marks the second consecutive week Poland has activated such measures. Last week, Polish jets were deployed, temporarily closing airports in Lublin and Rzeszów to allow military aircraft full freedom of movement.
