Long-Range Drone Warfare Reshapes Ukraine-Russia Conflict

The war in Ukraine has entered a new phase defined by long-range drone warfare, with both sides using these weapons to strike military, industrial, and economic targets hundreds of kilometers behind the front lines. Ukrainian units like the 413th Drone Regiment "Raid" routinely launch domestically produced FP-2 drones, capable of carrying over 100 kilograms of explosives, against targets in occupied territories and deep inside Russia. Russia has responded by introducing faster, jet-powered drones like the Geran-4 and Geran-5, which have lowered Ukraine's interception rate from over 90% to around 60%. The escalating strikes are taking a heavy toll on civilians, with UN data showing 2,222 people killed in Ukraine in the first eight months of 2026, more than in all of 2025. Both sides face significant challenges, with Ukraine needing additional funding and Russia potentially mobilizing up to 300,000 troops after its parliamentary elections.
