Energy ceasefire aids Russia, Ukrainian analysts warn

jornaleconomico.sapo.pt (Portuguese) —

A US-brokered energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine is not being respected and is serving Russian interests, according to Ukrainian analysts, who accuse Washington of actively weakening Kyiv's defenses. The agreement, announced by President Donald Trump on October 11, has failed to stop Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure. On October 14, Russia struck 26 energy facilities supplying Kyiv, following roughly 200 attacks on the power sector and 17 on oil and gas installations in the prior week. Ukraine also reported that US-provided intelligence support has become less effective, and SpaceX restricted Starlink speeds for Ukrainian military use, disrupting operations. Kyiv says it still does not know the ceasefire's details, while the Kremlin claims its scope is undefined. The EU has released €2.86 billion for drones and missiles and agreed to €6.6 billion from the European Peace Facility, though experts say Europe cannot replace US military supplies.
