Germany and 21 nations push for human-controlled AI

Germany and 21 other countries, including Australia, Canada, South Africa, and Kenya, adopted a declaration on Monday calling for artificial intelligence to remain under human control, warning of significant security risks from rapid AI development. The declaration, adopted on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, demands that AI stay under human guidance and proposes creating a global oversight body. It urges mandatory safety tests and independent evaluations before new systems launch, without calling for a slowdown in development. Finnish President Alexander Stubb, a key initiator, hopes to bring the US and China on board, suggesting an oversight model similar to the IAEA. The UK, France, Italy, and Poland have not yet signed the declaration.
