Spain and 21 Other Nations Urge UN to Keep AI Under Human Control

Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and leaders from 21 other countries and institutions called Monday for artificial intelligence to be supervised by humans and for UN members to establish common standards for the technology. The document, released during the UN High-Level Week, was signed by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney, and Finland's President Alexander Stubb, among others. Signatories acknowledged AI's potential to improve lives and economies but warned of serious security risks if not properly questioned. The letter urges AI companies to develop transparent safety protocols with mandatory pre-deployment testing and independent evaluation. It also calls on governments to create common norms, enhance transparency, and ensure all nations have access to scientific capacity and reliable assessments.
