US proposes AI incident alert mechanism to China

The United States has proposed to China a new notification mechanism for artificial intelligence incidents that could affect national security, according to US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Sunday. The proposal emerged during weekend discussions ahead of a planned White House meeting this week between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Bessent said the goal is to move from opacity to greater transparency between the world's two largest AI powers, following talks in New York with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng. The announcement comes as US officials consider gathering AI industry leaders during Xi's visit, with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang expected to attend a state dinner. Officials also agreed to operationalize a new Trade Council and continue discussing lower tariffs on non-sensitive goods including consumer, agricultural, energy, and medical products.
