US proposes AI emergency hotline with China ahead of Trump-Xi summit
The US has proposed a direct notification channel with China for major AI-related national security incidents, as announced by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent following talks with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng in New York on Sunday. The proposal, part of a new "US-China AI dialogue," aims to increase transparency between the world's top two AI powers. It comes ahead of President Donald Trump's summit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Washington on Thursday, amid renewed warnings from researchers about catastrophic AI risks. China did not publicly endorse the proposal, with state media only describing the talks as constructive. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer confirmed export controls on AI chips were excluded from these discussions, while a separate framework for non-sensitive goods trade was also advanced.
