US and China discuss AI safety notification plan before Trump-Xi summit
US and Chinese officials discussed creating a notification mechanism for AI incidents affecting national security during talks in New York on Sunday, ahead of a Trump-Xi summit in Washington this week. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent called the meeting with Vice Premier He Lifeng "successful." Bessent said moving from opacity to transparency between the world's top two AI powers is important, and the talks also covered operationalizing a process for potential tariff cuts. A truce in the tariff war between the economies expires on November 10. The discussions come amid intense scrutiny of AI risks, with Trump dismissing concerns and arguing the US cannot lose its edge to China. In May, Xi and Trump discussed AI collaboration during Xi's visit to Beijing.
