22 Countries Push for Global AI Oversight and Human Control

A group of 22 countries, including Spain, Germany, Canada, and the European Commission, has endorsed a document calling for global oversight of advanced artificial intelligence and insisting it remain under human control. The proposal, reported by Politico, rejects slowing AI development but urges transparent safety protocols, mandatory pre-launch testing, and independent evaluations. It also suggests creating an international supervisory body similar to the International Atomic Energy Agency. The initiative's main weakness is that key AI powers, including the United States, China, France, Italy, and the UK, have not signed. Finnish President Alexander Stubb, a lead organizer, believes more countries will join the open letter.
