US and China discuss AI dialogue mechanism

The United States proposed Sunday that China establish a dialogue mechanism on artificial intelligence, amid concerns the technology could spiral out of control. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent made the proposal after talks in New York with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng. Bessent suggested a notification system between the two nations for incidents involving national security, saying it was important to move from opacity to transparency between the world's top two AI powers. The meeting came ahead of a summit between Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping in Washington. The discussions, held at JPMorgan's headquarters, also covered trade relations and extending a truce expiring in November. Washington seeks assurances China won't restrict rare earth exports, while both nations compete fiercely in AI development.
