Flavio Bolsonaro flees Brazil for Argentina and Ecuador after election defeat
Brazilian Senator Flavio Bolsonaro fled Brazil for Argentina and then Ecuador on Wednesday, three days after his defeat in the presidential election. He had claimed Monday he never planned to leave the country and would lead opposition to Lula. The son of former far-right President Jair Bolsonaro crossed the land border into Argentina with valid travel documents, then boarded a private flight to Guayaquil, Ecuador. His passports were canceled Tuesday after he failed to surrender them as ordered, though he also holds Italian nationality. He faces investigations for corruption and money laundering. Lula called the escape "shameful," while Flavio's brother Eduardo, based in the US, had advocated for his departure. The defeated candidate has not conceded, alleging election fraud without evidence. His father remains under house arrest for attempting to overturn his 2022 loss.
