Brazil's Liberal Party Recognizes Lula's Reelection as Bolsonaro Challenges Result
Brazil's Liberal Party (PL), led by Valdemar Costa Neto, officially recognized President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's reelection victory on Monday, October 26, while noting it would continue to seek clarifications on raised questions. The party's statement acknowledged the result proclaimed by the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) but echoed concerns about public spending increases before the vote. Defeated candidate Flávio Bolsonaro, who lost by 4,430,191 votes (48.21% to 51.79%), separately contested the outcome and announced plans to request the annulment of Lula's ticket. Bolsonaro also revealed federal police confiscated his passports and barred him from leaving the country, a measure he criticized. The PL celebrated its congressional gains, including 121 federal deputies and 29 senators, while Bolsonaro thanked his nearly 60 million voters but repeated unsubstantiated claims about election irregularities.
