Bolsonaro demands election annulment as Trump holds back
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has won re-election, but defeated candidate Flávio Bolsonaro is refusing to accept the result and has demanded the election be annulled, echoing his father's actions four years ago. Bolsonaro claims the Supreme Court's decision to extend polling station hours by two hours unfairly benefited Lula, citing the judge's past ties to the president. However, only 34,000 of 130 million voters cast ballots during the extension, and Lula won by 4.3 million votes. The extension was ordered after conservative mayors reduced public transit, hindering poorer voters. The Trump administration has delayed congratulating Lula, while democratic countries and US Democratic lawmakers have recognized his victory. Analysts doubt Bolsonaro can mobilize supporters like his father, whose refusal to concede led to the January 2023 coup attempt.
