Brazil's top court orders probe into foreign election interference

g1.globo.com (Portuguese) —

Brazil's Supreme Court Justice Flávio Dino ordered the Federal Police on Tuesday to investigate suspected foreign interference in this year's elections, including alleged manipulation of digital platform algorithms and offers of rare earth minerals in exchange for political support. The investigation will examine claims that algorithms were used to favor or harm candidates, possible foreign campaign financing, and mentions of the Rockbridge Network in negotiations to support candidate Flávio Bolsonaro. Dino cited an intelligence agency report warning of external interference risks. Brazilian law prohibits foreign donations to political campaigns. The court also seeks to determine whether any foreign financing was linked to access to Brazil's rare earth reserves, which are state-owned and require national-interest authorization. Meta denied favoring any candidate, attributing issues to technical failures.
