Trump claims Brazil election 'rigged' after Bolsonaro's defeat
US President Donald Trump on Monday denounced Brazil's presidential election as "rigged" after leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva won re-election against conservative senator Flavio Bolsonaro. Trump called the vote "lamentable" and "corrupt," though he said he did not endorse a candidate. Lula won with 51.8% of the vote against Bolsonaro's 48.2%, a margin of 4.4 million votes, which the defeated senator also dismissed as fraudulent. Bolsonaro, son of former far-right President Jair Bolsonaro who is serving a 27-year sentence for coup attempt, said he was barred from leaving Brazil by Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes. He announced plans to challenge the results, while Lula prepares for his fourth term.
