US grants visa to Flavio Bolsonaro after Brazil election loss
The United States will issue visas to defeated Brazilian presidential candidate Flavio Bolsonaro and his family following his loss to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Sunday's runoff election, the State Department confirmed. A US official said they will be allowed entry into the country. Bolsonaro's whereabouts remain unclear after he left Brazil despite a court order banning him from travelling abroad. Argentine authorities said he entered the country with valid documents and flew with his wife and two daughters on a private flight bound for Guayaquil, Ecuador, where the plane made a brief stop before reportedly flying to an unknown destination. Bolsonaro is under investigation in Brazil for alleged corruption, money laundering and tax evasion, and was ordered to surrender his passport. He has maintained close ties with US President Donald Trump, who said he would welcome him and described the election as "terrible."
