Brazil's Liberal Party Concedes Election as Bolsonaro Challenges Result
Brazil's Liberal Party has conceded that its candidate Flavio Bolsonaro lost Sunday's election to incumbent President Lula da Silva. Bolsonaro himself refuses to accept defeat, claiming "the system won" and announcing a lawsuit against Lula for alleged campaign abuse of power. Bolsonaro also filed a retroactive objection to a judge's decision extending polling hours by two hours for voters facing transport issues. The number of votes cast during that extension is far too small to explain the nearly 4.5 million vote margin between Lula and Bolsonaro. Police have reportedly ordered Bolsonaro to surrender his passport and barred him from leaving the country amid a corruption and money laundering investigation, which he denies. His father Jair remains under house arrest for a coup attempt after his 2022 loss. Foreign allies including President Trump and Elon Musk have echoed claims of a manipulated result.
