Bolsonaro surrenders passports after conceding defeat to Lula in Brazil election
Brazilian presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro has agreed to surrender his passports after police ordered him to, saying he is now prohibited from leaving the country. The order follows his acknowledgment of defeat to leftist Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Sunday's election. Lula, who turns 81 on Tuesday, won by roughly 4.4 million votes after trailing in the first round, with turnout rising in the runoff. Bolsonaro initially alleged foul play over a two-hour polling extension, but his party later accepted the official results, while a Supreme Court justice cited a comment from his US-based brother Eduardo as basis for the travel restriction. Bolsonaro, who faces a corruption probe over a film about his father, denied any intention to flee and claimed "unprecedented abuse" by Lula. Markets fell nearly 17 percent on investor concerns, while world leaders largely congratulated Lula, though US President Donald Trump called the election "rigged."
