Bolsonaro thanks Trump, claims coup in Brazil
Flavio Bolsonaro, who fled to the US after losing Brazil's presidential election, declared himself the rightful president on Wednesday, alleging a "coup" by winner Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and the Supreme Court without providing evidence, while thanking US President Donald Trump for his reception. International observers deemed Sunday's runoff election fair, which Bolsonaro lost to left-wing incumbent Lula. Lula accused Washington of conspiring with the Bolsonaro family to restore them to power, calling the flight shameful. Bolsonaro later softened his claim on X, calling himself "leader" instead of "president." Bolsonaro arrived in Miami with his wife and daughters, receiving US visas. Trump, who faces his own disputed 2020 election loss, called the result "manipulated." Bolsonaro faces investigations for money laundering and corruption, while his father Jair was sentenced to 27 years for an attempted coup.
