Lula expands support in São Paulo and Rio, flipping 15 Bolsonaro zones from 2022

oglobo.globo.com (Portuguese) —

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's reelection expanded his party's territorial reach in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, winning in 15 electoral zones that backed Jair Bolsonaro in 2022. In São Paulo, Lula won 43 of 57 electoral zones, up from 35 in 2022 and six in 2018, receiving 55.5% of valid votes. In Rio, he won 21 zones versus one in 2018, capturing 51.54% of votes and flipping six North Zone districts. Analysis suggests a "Tarula" voting pattern, where thousands backed Governor Tarcísio de Freitas for governor but Lula for president, including in nine zones that shifted from PL to PT. Lula's São Paulo result marks his best proportional performance since 2002.
