Bolsonaro flees to US after Brazil election loss, declares himself winner
Flavio Bolsonaro has declared himself the rightful winner of Brazil's presidential election after losing to incumbent Lula da Silva, and has fled to the United States, thanking President Donald Trump for welcoming him. Bolsonaro lost Sunday's election with 48.2 percent of votes against Lula's 51.8 percent, but refuses to recognize the result and demands a new vote. He claims election fraud occurred, allegations that Brazilian newspaper Folha and researchers describe as unfounded and lacking evidence. Bolsonaro traveled to Miami via Argentina and Ecuador after a court ordered him to surrender his passport amid a money laundering investigation. His father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, also fled to Florida after his 2022 defeat and is now serving a 27-year prison sentence for an attempted coup.
