Paris bans protests near key sites as Macron criticizes Trump over riot remarks
Police banned protests in parts of Paris on Thursday as France braced for more demonstrations following weekend unrest that became some of the worst street violence in years. The ban covers key landmarks including the Elysee presidential palace, parliament, the Louvre, and the Champs-Elysees. President Emmanuel Macron appeared to criticize US counterpart Donald Trump for exploiting the riots for political gain in the US midterm elections, saying some leaders made "stupid comments" while campaigning. France admitted losing control of the violence, with 2,500 people detained and 174 jailed, as fresh cost-of-living protests are planned for Saturday. The unrest has rattled financial markets, with France's 10-year bond yield passing five percent and Moody's expected to downgrade the country's debt. The Yellow Vest movement announced a march from Bastille square on Saturday and nationwide demonstrations on November 5.
