Greek Students and Teachers March in Athens Over High Living Costs
Thousands of students and teachers marched through Athens on Wednesday to protest Greece's high cost of living and demand affordable housing and increased education funding, as similar demonstrations spread to other Greek cities. Protesters in Thessaloniki and Patras also held rallies, with demonstrators criticizing government measures like a 120-euro monthly rent subsidy, which they said covers less than half of typical rent costs. Teachers joined the protests with a strike, citing deteriorating school conditions. Riot police monitored the Athens march with spot checks and bag searches, while shops along the route closed their shutters as a precaution. The protests reflect broader European unrest over rising living costs, which has also sparked violence in France, Italy, and Albania.
