Italy tightens protest laws after Milan riots, adds 500 soldiers
Italy announced new security measures Tuesday to combat violent protests after weekend riots in Milan's shopping district, where looters, many minors, caused damage. The decree includes deploying 500 additional soldiers and new penalties for demonstrators. Premier Giorgia Meloni called the young rioters' presence "painful and frightening," noting they came to smash things and film themselves. The decree creates an offense of violent demonstration punishable by up to five years in prison and fines, with parents liable for damage caused by minors. The measure also presumes those over 14 understand their actions, unless proven otherwise, and adds detention beds and juvenile judges. Over 100 police were injured during two days of unrest, with more than 30 of 50 arrested being minors.
