Italy deploys 500 soldiers to Milan after riots and looting
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced Tuesday the deployment of 500 soldiers to Milan until the end of the year to support police following weekend riots and looting in the city. The government also plans stricter penalties for protest violence, including easier detention for minors, fines for parents of children who cause damage, and a new offense for violent participation in demonstrations. Nearly 200 police officers were injured and 330 people arrested. The unrest occurred amid protests by students, farmers, and truck drivers over the rising cost of living and fuel prices. Transport Minister Matteo Salvini promised €480 million to address the fuel crisis, though some unions warned blockades would continue. President Sergio Mattarella opposed granting police powers to the deployed soldiers.
