France fast-tracks trials for 2,500 looting suspects after riots
Suspects arrested for looting during recent violent protests in France are undergoing expedited trials, according to the New York Times on October 21. The report observed 14 cases at a Paris court, with most involving young men from working-class suburbs. Among the cases, a 21-year-old denied throwing stones and building barricades, claiming police assault, while prosecutors said he had smoke signals. An 18-year-old with stolen glasses and shirts said he didn't know they were stolen, and two friends admitted to stealing whiskey bottles after incriminating messages surfaced. Over 2,500 people are detained nationwide, with about 550 in Paris, prompting courts to double expedited trial capacity. Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin vowed strict action, noting 95% of detainees are male and 70% adults, including both immigrants and fully integrated French citizens.
