Albanian PM calls police station arson a 'red line' as protests escalate
Albanian PM Edi Rama accused protesters of crossing a “red line” Monday after a police station was set ablaze during anti-government demonstrations, escalating weeks of unrest. He declared that violence is a crime and a clear boundary must be drawn at this critical stage of democratic development. Protesters, driven by demands for better university conditions, anger over corruption, and calls for Rama’s resignation, have clashed with police since last Tuesday. On Monday, hundreds gathered outside the education ministry, where stones were met with tear gas, and Rama offered dialogue except to those committing violence or parties not distancing themselves from it. Authorities report around 300 people injured in the clashes, over half of them police, with demonstrators using water cannons, tear gas, and rubber bullets against them. A 22-year-old student, Leka Sina, vowed the movement would continue until Rama resigns, insisting protesters seek social peace and better living conditions.
