France curfews restore calm in Paris after weekend riots
Paris returned to calm Tuesday after its first quiet night since weekend riots, as authorities imposed curfews in several cities to prevent further unrest. At least 2,400 people were arrested following Saturday's nationwide protests over living costs and school conditions. Rioters clashed with police, set cars on fire, stormed public buildings, and engulfed a historic city hall in flames. Sunday evening saw small groups burn trash bins and loot businesses in Paris, Lyon, Marseille, and other cities. A curfew ran from 11 p.m. Monday to 6 a.m. Tuesday in the capital. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said new curfews would be imposed where needed, with 149 people jailed as of Tuesday noon. Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin asked prosecutors to appeal lenient sentences, and the National Assembly launched an inquiry into the Oct. 17 violence.
