French authorities accuse 'far-left' of plotting insurrection, vow tighter security
French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu accused "far-left groups" of plotting an insurrection on Tuesday, promising a heavy security deployment for new protests scheduled Saturday, while police imposed a fresh curfew in parts of Paris. Lecornu stated during a parliamentary session that small rebellious groups would not be allowed to march on the presidential and prime ministerial residences. The government faces sharp criticism after weekend protests over living costs turned violent, with looting described as the worst in years, occurring six months before presidential elections. Authorities have detained 2,513 people and imprisoned 123, while a 17-year-old girl lost an eye and a young man had his hand amputated. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez offered his resignation, which President Emmanuel Macron rejected. The crisis has drawn international attention, with former US President Donald Trump using the violence to amplify anti-immigration rhetoric.
