French union calls general strike for November 5 as protests loom
A major French trade union has called for a general strike on November 5 amid ongoing social unrest, citing a deep crisis and deteriorating conditions for most of the population. The General Confederation of Labor said in a statement Wednesday that living costs are high, wages are stagnant, many live in unstable conditions, and young people lack future prospects. Union leader Sophie Binet demanded a 10% minimum wage increase, fuel and food price freezes, and more support for companies facing layoffs. Binet also urged reversing social spending cuts in next year's budget and said members will join Saturday's protests wearing high-visibility red vests. Last Saturday's marches across France turned violent, resulting in riots, arson, and looting.
