France jails 149 after weekend violence and looting

ansa.it (Italian) —

French Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin announced the incarceration of 149 people in connection with weekend violence and looting during protests against the cost of living. He expressed satisfaction with the "extremely significant" penal responses, including pretrial detention and immediate imprisonment orders. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced new curfews will be imposed "where the situation requires" following the first curfews that "contributed to the calm of the night." Decisions will be made locally by prefects in collaboration with mayors, after violence erupted during October 17 demonstrations. Marseille will also face curfew measures from tonight, from 10 PM to 5 AM, according to Le Figaro and BFM TV. The restrictions will apply to commercial areas in the city center, not the entire city, and will remain in effect through Friday night.
