10,000 students and teachers protest in Athens for better school funding
Around 10,000 students, pupils, and teachers protested in Athens on Wednesday, demanding increased state funding for education, better school conditions, and less crowded classrooms. The demonstrations are part of a wave of similar protests across European countries. Police reported a peaceful march in central Athens and suburbs, with additional rallies in other cities. Protesters expressed solidarity with wider demonstrations in France and Europe over rising living costs and perceived deterioration of school conditions, increasing pressure on Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis's government ahead of 2027 elections. Greece faces stagnant wages, high rents, and energy costs years after its crisis. Education Minister Sofia Zacharaki acknowledged housing pressures and cited over 733 million euros in projects for student housing and infrastructure. The average monthly salary remains around 1,500 euros, unchanged from 2009, while inflation and fuel price hikes have eroded purchasing power.
