Paris imposes new curfew after weekend riots and looting

metronieuws.nl (Dutch) —

Paris police have announced a new curfew for parts of the city, effective from Tuesday 11:00 PM to Wednesday 6:00 AM, following weekend riots and looting during protests against government policy. The curfew applies to Place de la République in eastern Paris and the central Les Halles district. A ban on public gatherings from Tuesday 8:00 PM also covers the presidential palace, parliament, senate, Champs-Élysées, Place Vendôme, and near train stations. French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said the curfew, introduced Monday, helped ensure nighttime calm. It was a response to weekend violence, when demonstrations against government policy escalated into riots and looting across France.
