Italy to send 500 troops to Milan after violent unrest
Italy is preparing to deploy 500 troops to Milan following days of violent unrest, with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government expected to approve tougher security measures targeting youth gangs, vandalism and looting on Tuesday. The deployment, proposed by Defence Minister Guido Crosetto, is part of a legislative decree set for cabinet approval on 20 October. Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini welcomed the move as a "victory for the League," following an emergency meeting chaired by Meloni on public order. The decree will extend preventive police detention to minors, restrict gatherings of individuals linked to vandalism, and boost military presence under Operation Safe Streets. Formal approval is expected at Tuesday's cabinet meeting.
