Avignon court hands down first sentences after October 17 riots

actu.fr (French) —

The first convictions have been handed down in Avignon following the October 17 riots, with three individuals sentenced by the local criminal court on Monday. The sentences include eight months in prison (six suspended) for an 18-year-old involved in clashes, six months suspended for a 26-year-old, and six months firm for a 23-year-old convicted of throwing a paving stone at police and looting a phone accessory store. Since the firm sentence is under two years, the 23-year-old will not serve jail time directly but will face alternatives like electronic monitoring or semi-liberty. A total of 21 people were arrested in connection with the violence targeting the prefecture, police, and shops.
