Italy's Meloni calls cabinet meeting to back truckers and farmers amid fuel protests
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has convened a Cabinet meeting for tomorrow to approve a decree law supporting the trucking and agricultural sectors, following roadblocks by hauliers protesting high fuel prices. The government aims to translate commitments into concrete measures. Despite an agreement with industry associations, protests continue, prompting authorities to distinguish legitimate grievances from illegal actions. The Interior Ministry has identified 1,339 people, reported 71, and sanctioned 242 for blocking roads, mainly in Campania, while also escorting numerous transport vehicles. Agriculture Minister Francesco Lollobrigida expressed concern over spoiled goods unable to reach the North, suggesting some protest leaders have criminal records. Transport Minister Matteo Salvini mentioned a possible diesel price cap and confirmed payments to thousands of companies have begun.
