France deploys military to back police ahead of new protests

delfi.ee (French) —

France is deploying military forces to support police ahead of new nationwide protests expected this weekend, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced Tuesday. The government will assign Sentinelle army units to static security missions, freeing police and gendarmes to handle street unrest. Nearly 1,000 officers were injured during last weekend's demonstrations, which Lecornu called unacceptable. Nighttime curfews remain in place in Paris, Marseille, Bordeaux, Nice, Lyon, and Lille following violent protests. Lecornu said additional curfews may be imposed if necessary.
