Italy approves security decree targeting juvenile crime after riots

ansa.it (Italian) —

Italy's Council of Ministers approved a new decree on security and juvenile crime, introducing new measures to combat violence following weekend riots in Milan and other cities. Premier Giorgia Meloni announced a new crime of "violent participation in a demonstration," with penalties up to five years in prison and fines up to 20,000 euros. The decree also extends preventive detention to minors and holds parents financially responsible for damages caused by their children. The Quirinale made one exception regarding judicial police powers for the military. A Cgil demonstration is scheduled for tomorrow in Milan, while officials debate whether repression alone is sufficient to address the underlying social issues.
