Greek Students and Teachers Protest Education Cuts and Living Costs
Thousands of students and teachers protested across Greece on Wednesday against education cuts and the high cost of living, with marches intensifying throughout the day. Over 10,000 people gathered peacefully in central Athens during a 24-hour strike called by the primary teachers' union DOE. Teachers are demanding a 20% salary increase and housing assistance for those assigned to posts in other cities, particularly in tourist areas with high rents. The union says nearly half of teachers earn less than 1,000 euros monthly and denounces tens of thousands of school vacancies causing lost class hours. The protests follow similar actions by French students and Spanish public teachers, with youth also camping in Athens and Thessaloniki over housing costs. Police deployed about 3,000 officers in the capital, detaining ten people, while civil servants, pensioners, and doctors held separate actions.
