Greek protests: 3,000 police deployed as students, teachers, workers rally in Athens
Students, teachers, and public sector workers are holding protests and rallies in central Athens and other major Greek cities today, with around 3,000 police officers deployed to monitor the demonstrations. The protests demand wage increases and more funding for public education and health. A major rally is scheduled for noon at the Propylaea in Athens, with the metro station "Panepistimio" closing at 10 a.m. Police will conduct checks and guard key sites like ministries and embassies, while some shops have installed protective coverings. In Thessaloniki, five metro stations will temporarily close from 9 a.m. The protests are supported by work stoppages from public sector union ADEDY and teachers' union OLME. Student demands include lower rents, increased housing allowances, and more dormitory places, with organizers linking their actions to similar protests across Europe.
