Greek Students and Teachers Protest for Education Funding and Pay
Thousands of students and teachers protested across Greece on Wednesday, demanding higher state funding for education, better facilities, and smaller class sizes, echoing similar demonstrations in other European countries. About 10,000 demonstrators rallied peacefully in Athens, with additional protests in cities nationwide, voicing solidarity with movements in France over soaring living costs and deteriorating school conditions. The protests pressure Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis' government ahead of mid-2027 elections, as Greeks face stagnant wages and high rents. The demonstrations follow recent unrest in France and Albania over living costs and corruption. Greece has recovered from its 2009-2018 debt crisis, but average salaries remain at 2009 levels, and many young Greeks struggle with high housing costs.
