French PM: Targeted curfews credited for peaceful night
French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu said targeted curfews contributed to a peaceful night after protests, adding that new restrictions will be imposed where needed. Police confirmed the night passed without major incidents across France. Curfews were in effect Monday in several cities, with some restrictions starting at midnight and others, like in Bordeaux and Nice, lasting several days. Many cities will maintain curfews Wednesday night, including Paris from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. around Republique square and Les Halles. The curfews and protest bans respond to weekend riots over high prices, which included looting and arson. The government blames the far-left for the violence. Police arrested a 34-year-old suspect linked to the Limoges city hall fire, which destroyed the 19th-century building.
