Italy approves new offense for violent protest participation

lagazzettadelmezzogiorno.it (Italian) —

Italy's Council of Ministers approved a new decree on security and juvenile crime, introducing the new offense of violent participation in a demonstration, punishable by up to five years in prison and a 20,000 euro fine. The penalty increases for offenders wearing face coverings or causing injury. The decree also applies a "who breaks, pays" principle, making parents liable for damages caused by minors, and allows preventive detention for minors aged 14 to 18. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced the measures following weekend violence in Milan and other cities. The decree also deploys 500 additional soldiers to Milan and adds magistrates and detention places for juvenile justice.
