French riots: A CRS officer's frontline account
Violent riots across France on Saturday caused extensive damage and numerous injuries, with 150 police officers and gendarmes reported wounded, according to initial counts. David, a 53-year-old CRS officer from Lille and football coach in Quiévrain, witnessed the unrest firsthand. David, a police officer since 2001, described the interventions as highly violent, noting that his colleagues suffered sometimes serious injuries. He attributes the tensions to a heavy political, economic, and social climate in France, citing rising living costs, increased fuel prices, and declining purchasing power. Students have also joined the movement to protest their study conditions, adding to what David calls an "explosive cocktail" of grievances fueling the nationwide unrest.
