Italy deploys 500 soldiers to Milan after weekend riots
Italy's Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi announced that 500 soldiers deployed to Milan will have full mobility across the territory, following weekend riots and vandalism, with Mayor Giuseppe Sala expressing full agreement on the need for control and repression. The security committee meeting in Milan's prefecture addressed concerns about potential unrest on Saturday, with Sala warning it could be a delicate day and a test for managing protests differently. Infrastructure Minister Matteo Salvini stated the message is that "nothing will remain unpunished" and that damages should be paid by "distracted parents" of young offenders. The deployment follows clashes and vandalism in Milan's city center over the weekend, with officials including police chief Vittorio Pisani and prosecutor Marcello Viola attending the meeting. Piantedosi had already announced the 500-soldier reinforcement, which will operate similarly to existing deployments in cities like Rome.
