Italy Ensures Essential Supplies as Trucker Blockades Ease in Calabria
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni chaired a government meeting at Palazzo Chigi regarding trucker protests and highway blockades, with the Interior Ministry ensuring the distribution of essential goods and medicine. The government pledged police escorts for any transport requesting them. The truckers' protest in Calabria was suspended by Fedralog, which expressed trust in the government ahead of an October 27 meeting with Minister Matteo Salvini. Authorities have identified 1,339 people, reported 71, and sanctioned 242 for illegal roadblocks, while escorting around 500 trucks. The blockades have caused severe shortages, empty supermarket shelves, and halted fuel supplies at airports in Calabria. Mayors of Naples and Bari report paralyzed cities, with significant damage to agriculture and industry, including a 30 million euro loss in the kiwi sector.
