Italy sends 500 more soldiers to Milan after youth riots
Italy's government, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, has announced the deployment of 500 additional soldiers to Milan following violent protests and looting in the city. The decision came after a crisis meeting, with the extra military forces aimed at preventing further unrest in the city center. Weekend protests, initially peaceful against high living costs and government plans, escalated into riots, with over 270 temporary arrests, mostly of minors, and five juveniles placed in pre-trial detention. Italy's inflation rate stands at 4.2 percent, and comparisons are drawn to French riots. At least 14 security forces were injured, with damages estimated in the millions. Meloni, governing for four years, faces political pressure from the new right-wing party Futuro Nazionale ahead of next year's elections.
