Greek teachers strike over low pay and housing costs
Greece is experiencing a day of strikes and protests on Wednesday over low wages and the high cost of living, with primary school teachers holding a 24-hour strike and students camping outside Parliament demanding affordable housing. Demonstrations are planned in over 50 cities. The teachers are demanding a 20% salary increase and housing assistance for those assigned to posts in other cities, particularly in tourist areas with high rents. The DOE union says nearly half of teachers earn less than 1,000 euros, and it highlights tens of thousands of vacancies and unsafe school facilities. Public sector union ADEDY and secondary teachers' union OLME have called for several-hour stoppages to join the marches. Around 3,000 police officers have been deployed in central Athens in anticipation of potential incidents, according to Newsit.
